Arithmetic Reasoning ASVAB: What It Tests, Plus Practice
Arithmetic Reasoning is the ASVAB subtest that tests your ability to solve arithmetic word problems, not your ability to recall formulas. It’s one of the highest-stakes subtests on the whole test: it feeds your AFQT (the enlistment gate), the Army’s GT score, and the Air Force’s Electronics and Mechanical composites, all at once. On the CAT-ASVAB it’s 15 scored questions in 55 minutes; on paper it’s 30 questions in 36 minutes.

The confusion most test-takers run into isn’t the math itself. It’s that Arithmetic Reasoning problems are written as short stories, and pulling the actual calculation out of the sentence is a separate skill from doing the calculation once you’ve found it.
What does Arithmetic Reasoning actually test?
Word problems requiring one or more of the four basic operations, ratios, percentages, and unit conversions, applied to a real-world scenario rather than presented as a bare equation. No calculator is allowed on either ASVAB format, so mental math and estimation matter as much as knowing the right operation to use.

Why does Arithmetic Reasoning matter more than most subtests?

What’s the single biggest mistake on this subtest?
Solving the wrong problem correctly. A question can bury the actual calculation inside irrelevant details (names, dates, extra numbers that don’t matter), and the fastest way to lose points isn’t bad arithmetic, it’s identifying the wrong operation or the wrong numbers to use in the first place. Read the question twice before doing any math: once for what’s being asked, once for which numbers actually answer it.

1. A supply truck carries 480 crates. If 3/8 of the crates are unloaded at the first stop, how many crates remain on the truck? A) 180 B) 240 C) 300 D) 320
Answer: C) 300. 3/8 of 480 is 180, so 480 - 180 = 300 remain.
2. A recruit runs 2.5 miles in 20 minutes. At that same pace, how long would it take to run 6 miles? A) 42 minutes B) 45 minutes C) 48 minutes D) 50 minutes
Answer: C) 48 minutes. The pace is 20 ÷ 2.5 = 8 minutes per mile. 6 miles × 8 minutes = 48 minutes.
3. A unit’s fuel tank holds 150 gallons. If the tank is currently at 40% capacity, how many more gallons are needed to fill it completely? A) 60 B) 75 C) 90 D) 110
Answer: C) 90. 40% of 150 is 60 gallons currently in the tank. 150 - 60 = 90 gallons needed.
4. Three soldiers split a $96 equipment reimbursement in a 1:2:3 ratio. How much does the soldier with the largest share receive? A) $16 B) $32 C) $48 D) $64
Answer: C) $48. The ratio parts total 1+2+3 = 6. Each part equals 96 ÷ 6 = $16. The largest share is 3 parts: 3 × 16 = $48.
5. A vehicle travels 240 miles using 15 gallons of fuel. At the same rate, how many gallons are needed to travel 400 miles? A) 20 B) 22 C) 25 D) 28
Answer: C) 25. The rate is 240 ÷ 15 = 16 miles per gallon. 400 ÷ 16 = 25 gallons.
What’s a fast way to sanity-check an answer under time pressure?
Estimate before you calculate exactly. Before committing to a precise answer, round the numbers in the problem to something easy to work with and get a rough sense of the expected size of the answer. If a question asks what 31% of 198 is, rounding to “about a third of 200” gives you a quick expectation of roughly 65 to 70, which lets you immediately rule out an answer choice like 20 or 150 before you’ve even finished the exact calculation. This habit catches misreads and arithmetic slips fast, since a precise but wildly-off answer stands out against your rough estimate.
How should I study for this subtest specifically?
Practice extracting the calculation from the sentence before worrying about speed. Once you can reliably identify which numbers and which operation a word problem needs, timing improves naturally, since you’re no longer re-reading questions multiple times to figure out what’s actually being asked.
